Duties The Medical Technician in this position works in the processing and blood drawing sections of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Section directing the operations of subordinate Medical Technicians and Student Medical Laboratory Aids at the Harry S. Truman VA Hospital, Columbia, MO. Major duties and responsibilities include: Directs work flow and assigns tasks to staff; Assigns and monitors training for new employees; Communicates problems to supervisor regarding blood drawing and specimen processing; Communicates with lab staff regarding specimen collection processes and issues; Accepts specimens for testing; Centrifuges specimens for testing and follows laboratory procedures for correct handling of all specimens; Uses computer programs to investigate specimen collection and sample issues; Performs phlebotomy on patients according to established guidelines. Responsible for training phlebotomy to new employees. DESIGNATED DRUG-TESTING POSITION: Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA. Applicants will not be appointed to the position if a verified positive drug test result is received. Qualifications ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY: In accordance with 38 U. S. C. 7402(d), No person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. Minimum Qualifications: Applicants must possess one (1) or more years of specialized experience that equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the Medical Technician position. To be creditable, the experience must have been equivalent to the next lower grade level in the Federal service. Qualifying experience may have been gained in (a) technical medical laboratory support work such as performing laboratory tests and examinations (chemical, microbiologic, hematologic and blood banking) and preparing reports of findings or (b) technical support work in a closely related field, e. g. biological laboratory technician work, that required application of the methods and techniques for the positions being filled. Specialized experience includes: Directing work flow and assigns tasks to staff; assigning and monitoring training for new employees; communicating problems to supervisor regarding blood drawing and specimen processing; communicating with lab staff regarding specimen collection processes and issues; accepting specimens for testing; centrifuge specimens for testing following laboratory procedures for correct handling of all specimens; using computer programs to investigate specimen collection and sample issues; and performing phlebotomy on patients according to established guidelines. OR Possess successfully completed four (4) year course of study leading to a Bachelor's degree with major study or at least 24 semester hours in subjects directly related to the position. This education must have been obtained in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or university.
