Job Description Join the team responsible for developing the SPIRIT code and making all code changes to the application. SPIRIT is a computer system, oversight and support surrounding the USDA – WIC Federal Grant Program. Software modifications may include; changes necessary to meet policy or regulatory requirements, design changes, defect fixes. The Data Base Administrator (DBA) is responsible for providing technical support for the database environment including overseeing the development and organization of the databases, assessment and implementation of new technologies, and providing Information Technology with a long-term perspective on the relationship of database technology to the business opportunities facing the company. It is extremely important to the company that on-line processing database systems offer the highest reliability and performance possible. The DBA is challenged to work with architecture, application development and operations to help achieve a state-of-the-art environment that meets current and future business objectives. Responsibilities All aspects of SQL Server Database Administration. Building database servers, applying necessary hot fixes and/ or SPs, upgrading the SQL Servers, configuring the server parameters, backing up and restoring system and user databases. Creation of user databases, creation of maintenance plans and jobs, user creation and maintenance, database log space monitoring and maintenance. Responsible for ensuring availability and performance of the databases that support the system. Performance tuning both in terms of SQL tuning and also server level tuning. Work to ensure that the associated hardware resources allocated to the databases and to ensure high resilience and performance tuning. To proactively monitor the database systems to ensure secure services with minimum downtime (SQL Server 2008). Responsible for providing trend analysis to management team to enable them to make informed decisions regarding resource management. Responsible for troubleshooting and problem solving of SQL development. Responsible for improvement and maintenance of the databases to include rollout and upgrades. Responsible for implementation and release of database changes according to agreed timescales and costs. Trains and develops technical support and applications staff to better utilize on-line processing databases environment. Provides and designs tools to assist in the management of the database and transaction processing environment. Works to provide a working model of our transaction processing environment for capacity assessment and planning. Requirements • 5+ years of supporting MS SQL large databases in a 24x7 production environment. • Bachelor Degree in one of the following subject areas: Computer Science, Business Administration, Information Technology or related field. • IT operation with strong understanding of database structures, theories, principles, and practices. • 5-7 years Microsoft SQL Server database experience. • Understanding of, and experience with, server-client computing and relational database environments. • Good interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills and technical documentation skills. • Self motivated and directed, with keen attention to detail. • Able to prioritize and execute tasks in a high-pressure environment. • Experience working in a team-oriented, collaborative environment. • Experience of managing multiple MS SQL 2000 & 2005 RDBMS on large systems. • Practical experience in monitoring and tuning a database to provide a high availability service. • Transactional SQL experience. • Practical experience in managing the internal and external MS SQL database security. Preferred Qualifications SPIRIT -WIC Federal Grant Program/State experience would be a plus.
